A retrograde satellite of Jupiter, 23 401 000 km from the planet’s centre; also known as Jupiter XI. It orbits in 734.17 days at an inclination of 165° to the ecliptic. Carme is about 46 km in diameter, and was discovered in 1938 by the American astronomer Seth Barnes Nicholson (1891–1963). It is the largest member of the so-called Carme retrograde irregular group of Jovian satellites, which have comparable orbital inclinations and eccentricities. Members of this group include Arche, Pasithee, Herse, Chaldene, Kale, Isonoe, Aitne, Erinome, Taygete, Kalyke, Eukelade, and Kallichore.
