A 1.8-m reflector, opened in 1993 at Mount Graham International Observatory, Arizona. It is owned by the Vatican Observatory, and jointly operated by them and Steward Observatory. It consists of the Alice P. Lennon Telescope and the adjoining Thomas J. Bannan Astrophysics Facility, named after their benefactors. The telescope’s mirror has the unusually short focal ratio of f/1.0, making the tube very compact. The Gregorian secondary employs adaptive optics to improve image quality.
