A rocket launch site used by NASA, a promontory on the Atlantic coast of Florida, 367 km north of Miami. The Kennedy Space Center is nearby.
By March 2001, around 3200 missiles and rockets had been launched from the Cape Canaveral site. These include lift-offs to the Moon during the Apollo project, for which a new launch complex was constructed on 324 sq km of land, doubling the size of the Cape Canaveral site.
To celebrate 50 years since the first launch at the site, 50 model rockets were launched on 24 July 2000, close to the original launch pad.
