An astronomical observatory of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics at an altitude of 725 m near Kavalur, India, about 175 km southeast of Bangalore. It was founded in 1967 as Kavalur Observatory and renamed in 1986 after the Indian astronomer Manali Kallat Vainu Bappu (1927–82). Its main telescope is the 2.3-m Vainu Bappu Telescope, opened in 1986. Other instruments include 1-m and 1.3-m reflectors opened in 1972 and 2013 respectively.
