He founded a clandestine liberation organization against Portuguese rule. From 1963–1973 he led a successful guerrilla campaign which had gained control of much of the interior before he was assassinated, supposedly by a Portuguese agent. In the following year Portuguese Guinea became independent as Guinea-Bissau.
