A composite material designed to have physical properties not found in nature. To create a metamaterial, ordinary materials are combined in very small-scale regular repeated structures that can affect the behaviour of electromagnetic radiation whose wavelength is larger than those structures. Of interest are materials that have a negative index of refraction. Metamaterials can also be developed for special mechanical and acoustic wave properties. See also nanostructure.
