The area of the Earth's atmosphere beginning at an altitude of about 16 km. The upper atmosphere is above the troposphere, and includes the stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and ionosphere. Many satellites orbit in this area, including NASA’s Ionospheric Connection Explorer, which launched on 8 December 2017 and is intended to give us new information about how Earth's atmosphere interacts with near-Earth space.
