A region of rapidly rotating air, up to 10 km in diameter, inside a large cumulonimbus cloud. Rotation commences near the middle of the cloud and extends downwards. If it continues beneath the cloud base it appears as a funnel cloud, and if it reaches to the ground it is a tornado.
