The apparent temperature of an astronomical source calculated on the assumption that the source is a black-body emitter. For a thin plasma, the brightness temperature is always less than the true temperature of the source. For non-thermal sources, the brightness temperature may bear no resemblance to the true temperature. Maser and synchrotron sources can have very high brightness temperatures.
