As commander-in-chief of the German army (1938–41), he carried out the occupation of Austria (see anschluss) and Czechoslovakia (see sudetenland) and conducted the successful campaigns against Poland, the Netherlands, and France. He was relieved of his command by Hitler as a scapegoat for the German failure to capture Moscow.
