Bowley was a mathematics graduate at Cambridge U. In 1895 he joined LSE, being appointed their first Professor of Statistics in 1919. He was the author of the influential textbook Elements of Statistics, first published in 1901, with a seventh edition in 1937. In this book he wrote ‘A knowledge of statistics is like a knowledge of a foreign language or of algebra; it may prove of use at any time under any circumstances’. He was President of the Econometric Society in 1938. In the same year he was President of the RSS having been awarded its Guy Medal in Silver in 1895 and in Gold in 1935.
