A member of one of the 20 species in eight genera of usually black, grey, or blue birds (family Ptilorhynchidae), 20–40 cm long. Courting males construct an elaborate display ground decorated with flowers, sticks, and any bright object the builder is able to find (or steal from neighbours). When a female approaches, the male performs a courtship display to entice her to inspect his bower more closely. Bowerbirds nest in trees, feed on insects, fruit, and seeds, and occur in Papua New Guinea and Australia.
