The ratio of sensible heat to latent heat transport from the ground to the atmosphere, which is generally calculated from the ratio of the vertical gradients of vapour pressure and temperature. It is used in the assessment of evaporation. It is named for the American physicist and astronomer Ira Sprague Bowen (1898–1973).
