A theory proposed by Max Born and Leopold Infeld (1898–1968) in 1934; it involved modifying Maxwell’s equations to make them nonlinear in the hope that this would remove the infinities in calculations in quantum electrodynamics. This hope was not fulfilled, but the Born–Infeld theory and generalizations of it are an important element of superstring theory.
