son of W. C. Bond. He worked closely with his father in studies of the Solar System and in developing astrophotography. In 1850 they took the first good photographs of the Moon, and followed this with the first photograph of a star (Vega). Bond himself studied the comparative brightnesses of the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter (the Bond albedo is named after him) and produced a notable report on Donati’s Comet of 1858.
