A conflict between Russia, Denmark, and Poland on one side, and Sweden opposing them, during which, in spite of the victories of Charles XII, Sweden lost its empire and Russia under Peter I became a major Baltic power. By the treaties of Stockholm (1719, 1720) Bremen and Verden were ceded to Hanover and most of Pomerania to Prussia. After further Russian naval successes, the Treaty of Nystadt, which ended the war, gave Russia Sweden’s Baltic provinces.
