US military and commercial aircraft manufacturer that has produced many components for NASA. These include the Delta rocket series and the Inertial Upper-Stage rockets for such probes as Galileo, Magellan, and Ulysses. Boeing is also the prime contractor for all of the US components of the International Space Station (ISS), including the Destiny science laboratory. Boeing's Delta II rocket launched the twin rovers to Mars in 2003, and its subsidiary, Spectrolab, made the high-efficiency solar cells to power the rovers. These solar cells have powered more than 500 satellites and interplanetary missions in the last 40 years. In 2016 Boeing awarded US$200 million in space contracts to small businesses for work on the ISS. The company is also helping NASA to develop its Space Launch System, which could transport humans to the Moon and Mars.
