A fly, 10–14 mm long with a grey head and thorax and metallic blue abdomen, red eyes, and hairy legs, that lays its eggs in faeces, decaying meat, or garbage, where its larvae feed. Adults feed on nectar and pollinate certain flowers. Adults tend to fly in groups. The larvae (called casters) are used as fishing bait. Bluebottles have a worldwide distribution.
