A dome of granitic migmatites and gneisses surrounded by a ‘mantle’ of metasediments which characteristically show outward-dipping parallel fabrics and foliations. The feature is thought to be produced by gravitational instabilities due to a density inversion in which dense rocks overlie a less dense, granite–gneiss core.
