The orthogonal thickness of a structure or bed, measured at right angles to its surface. Where the structure or bed is inclined, a surface exposure or borehole may give a value greater than the true thickness. In its simplest form true thickness can be calculated from an outcrop exposure by multiplying the width of the exposed layer by the sine of the angle of dip of the layer.
