Describing a molecule or ion in which there is a central atom and three atoms that form an equilateral triangle surrounding the central atom. Examples of trigonal planar molecules are boron trfluoride (BF₃) and sulphur trioxide (SO₃). Examples of trigonal planar ions are nitrate (NO₃²) and carbonate (CO₃²²).
