A rule that if a subshell in an atom has an orbital quantum number l then that subshell is full if it contains 2(2l+1) electrons. This rule, which was formulated in 1924 by John David Main-Smith and independently by Edmund Stoner, can be derived from the Pauli exclusion principle.
