单词 Confucianism
释义
Confucianism

Philosophy
  • The practical philosophy derived from the teachings of Confucius, influential in China and other Far Eastern countries. Confucianism was the state orthodoxy in China until the revolution of 1911. It teaches that harmony is found by following the right actions of piety and respect, religious ritual, and righteousness. Developed by followers such as Mencius, it emphasizes human goodness (and the right to rebel against those who stand in its way, such as unjust rulers), while its veneration of literacy, scholarship, poetry, ceremony, and music aligns it with the Platonic and Aristotelian ideals of contemplation and wisdom. World History
  • A system of philosophical and ethical teachings founded by the most celebrated Chinese philosopher Confucius (Kongzi, K’ung Fu Tzu) (c.551–479 bc) in the 6th century bc and developed by Mencius (Meng-tzu) (c.371–c.289 bc) in the 4th century bc, one of the two major Chinese ideologies. The basic concepts are ethical ones: love for one’s fellows, filial piety, decorum, virtue, and the ideal of the superior man. The publication in 1190 ad of the four great Confucian texts revitalized Confucianism throughout China. A second series of texts, the ‘five classics’, includes the I Ching. There are an estimated 5,800,000 followers of Confucianism in the world.
