A diffraction grating consisting of a transparent material such as glass or plastic on which lines are ruled. A beam of light passed through the grating will be partly split into sets, or orders, of spectra on either side of it, the blue light being diffracted the least and the red the most in each order. The orders of spectra increase in dispersion and faintness with distance from the direct beam.
