A star with a strong magnetic field, as demonstrated by the Zeeman splitting of lines in its spectrum. Prominent examples are the peculiar A stars (Ap stars), in which the strength of the field is also variable. More recently, the term ‘magnetic star’ has been applied to the AM Herculis stars, a class of cataclysmic variables which contains white dwarfs with extremely powerful magnetic fields (about 100 tesla).
