A long-period comet discovered on 1969 December 28 by the South African amateur John (‘Jack’) Caister Bennett (1914–90); formerly designated 1970 II. Comet Bennett reached perihelion, 0.54 au, on 1970 March 20, and was prominent throughout 1970 April. Its maximum magnitude was 0, and its tail reached 20°. Spiral jets were seen emerging from the nucleus. Rapid changes in the gas tail were caused by turbulent conditions in the solar wind close to sunspot maximum. Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.996, inclination 90°.0, and a period about 1700 years.
