A hermit from the age of 14, he attracted many followers by his piety; of these he chose the most devoted to form twelve small monastic communities, ultimately establishing a monastery at Monte Cassino (c.540). His Regula Monachorum (known as the Rule of St Benedict), austere but tempered by moderation, formed the basis of Western monasticism.
