The ratio of output current of a circuit or network to its input voltage, when both are real. This is also the small-signal gain of a transistor:
$g_{m} = \frac{\partial I_{out}}{\partial V_{in}}$
where the output current is the drain or collector current, and the input voltage is the gate-source or base-emitter voltage, for field-effect transistors and bipolar junction transistors, respectively. The symbol g_m is derived from the earlier term for transconductance, mutual conductance.
