The redistribution (fractionation) of elements between solid and liquid phases caused by heating and partial melting, and which also takes place in crystallization. For example, fractionation of trace elements apparently occurs in chondritic meteorites during the formation of chondrules (small molten droplets produced by heating and melting in outer space which are subsequently quenched).
