Bellman obtained his BA from Brooklyn College in 1941 and his MA in mathematics from U Wisconsin-Madison in 1943. In 1946 he obtained his PhD at U Wisconsin and joined their faculty in 1946. In 1952 he joined the Rand Corporation, introducing the concept of dynamic programming in the following year. He moved to U South Carolina in 1965. Elected a fellow of AAAS in 1975, he was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1979.
