Called by Hume ‘that silly, bigoted fellow Beattie’ Beattie was one of Hume's most persistent and virulent critics. He was part of the ‘common sense’ school centred on Aberdeen, whose most distinguished member was Thomas Reid. His principal work was An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth (1771).
