The direction of the course upon which a ship is set or the direction in which an object is sighted may be specified by giving its bearing, the angle that the direction makes with north. The angle is measured in degrees in a clockwise direction from north. For example, north-east has a bearing of 45°, and west has a bearing of 270°.
