A spacecraft lander of the European Space Agency Mars Express (MEx). Beagle 2, a UK-led project, was scheduled to analyse soil on Mars in search of life after being carried there by Mars Express, which was launched on 2 June 2003. Using an entry, descent, and landing system (EDLS), Beagle 2 was programmed to land on a flat region, Isidis Planitia. It descended there on 25 December 2003 but the transmission was lost and further contact proved impossible. In January 2015 the missing robot was found on the surface, apparently intact but with only partial deployment of the solar panels, meaning the transmitter could not function.
