A coarse-grained, basic igneous rock consisting of essential plagioclase feldspar, orthopyroxene (hypersthene or bronzite), and clinopyroxene (augite), with accessory ilmenite (see accessory mineral; essential mineral). Orthopyroxene is dominant over clinopyroxene, and the plagioclase is a calcic type (labradorite or bytownite). Norites, like gabbros, are found as layers in many large, layered basic intrusions (see intrusive), as well as forming intrusions in their own right.
