A loose term, sometimes including stars of mass a little greater than that of the Sun, and sometimes used only of stars of less than a few tenths of a solar mass, but still with sufficient mass to burn hydrogen in their cores (i.e. at least 0.08 solar masses). The first definition separates stars with radiative cores from higher-mass stars with convective cores; the latter restricts the term to red dwarfs.
