Popular name for the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, a member of our Local Group about 1.6 million l.y. away in Sagittarius. It is about 10 arcminutes in diameter and has an integrated magnitude of 8.1, but is not prominent visually. It was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884.
