A radio telescope array observing at wavelengths from 3.4 to 30 m being constructed in New Mexico by a consortium of US universities and research institutions. When finished, it will consist of 53 stations each containing 256 individual pyramid-shaped elements. The first station, LWA1, came into operation in 2011 near the centre of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at Socorro, New Mexico. Additional stations are being added as funding permits, eventually providing baselines up to 400 km. The headquarters of the LWA are at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
