The largest cat (family Felidae), with males averaging 2.5–4.0 m in length, most orange or brown with vertical black stripes and a white underside, but some are golden (few or no stripes) and some Bengal tigers are white. A tiger has a powerful body, strong forelegs, a large head, and a long tail. It is solitary and territorial. There are ten subspecies. Tigers occur in the Indian subcontinent, south-eastern Asia, eastern Siberia, and southern China. They are endangered in all these regions.
