The supercluster of galaxies that contains the Local Group, which lies near its edge. It is also known as the Virgo Supercluster since it is centred on the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. The local supercluster has a flattened shape and is probably around 100 million l.y. across. It probably contains at least 10 000 galaxies. Supergalactic coordinates are defined with reference to the plane of the local supercluster.
