The energy a system of particles has owing to the motions of the particles arising from the temperature of the system. The concept of the thermal energy of a system is a recognition that heat is a form of energy. When the system of particles is a gas, the thermal energy can be quantitatively described using the kinetic theory of gases. See also thermal velocity.
