specializing in Bayesian inference. Lindley’s mathematical studies at Cambridge U were interrupted by the Second World War, during which he worked with Barnard. He joined the Cambridge faculty in 1948, moving in 1960 to establish the Statistics Department at U Wales, Aberystwyth (where he supervised Gittins). In 1967 he moved to UCL (where he supervised Smith). He was awarded the Guy Medal of the RSS in Silver in 1968, and in Gold in 2002. He was the IMS Wald Lecturer in 1988. The ISBA awards a biennial prize in his honour.
