A branch of optics in which the characteristic wave features of diffraction and interference occur because of the quantum-mechanical wave nature of atoms and their associated de Broglie wavelengths. Atomic optics began with experiments demonstrating the wave nature of atoms by diffraction in 1930. Atomic optical effects are most readily detected with very cold atoms moving slowly.
