单词 terrane
释义
terrane

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • 1. A fault-bounded area or region which is characterized by a stratigraphy, structural style, and geologic history distinct from those of adjacent areas, and which is not related to those areas by unconformable contacts or facies changes. This usage has recently become frequent in studies of orogenic belts in which terranes can have origins as accretionary wedges, island arcs, and microplates. Initially, ‘displaced’ or ‘allochthonous’ was used to qualify the word ‘terrane’ and to distinguish such terranes from merely ‘suspect terranes’, but all three qualifiers are falling into disuse.

    2. N. American spelling of terrain, increasingly coming into general usage.

Geography
  • In geology, a fragment or block of crust with an individual geological history that differs from the surrounding areas, and is usually bounded by faults. Accreted terranes are those that become attached to a continent by tectonic processes. If a relatively small crustal fragment is accreted to a larger continent, it is an exotic terrane (originating elsewhere). Superterranes are composite terranes, composed of individual terranes and other assemblages, which share a distinctive tectonic history; see Mezger et al. (2001) J. Metam. Geol. 19, 2.
