A NASA satellite, 6.8 m long and 3.5 m wide, that was launched on 18 December 1999 into a Sun-synchronous orbit at a height of about 700 km, each orbit taking 99 minutes. It became fully operational on 24 February 2000. Terra carried five sensors: advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (ASTER), clouds and Earth’s radiant energy system (CERES), multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer (MISR), moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and measurements of pollution in the troposphere (MOPITT). These collect data on the interactions between the atmosphere, land, oceans, and radiant energy. It was still functioning in November 2018.
