A graduate of New York U, in 1941 Levene moved to Columbia U, working on quality control for the war effort. Supervised by Wolfowitz, he completed his PhD in 1947 and joined the Columbia faculty as a biostatistician, retiring in 1982. Kruskal was one of his research students.
