A term used to describe the process of linking a file to a certain application in such a way that when the file is opened the application is opened with the file in its main window. For example, when a file has the extension htm indicating a Web file and you click it, a browser is used to open the file. The term is also used to describe users of the Internet who take part in an associate program.
