A border dispute between Colombia and Peru. The territory of Leticia on the upper Amazon River was ceded to Colombia by a treaty in 1924; it became an object of contention again in 1932 when Peruvian citizens seized the territory and executed Colombian officials. Colombia carried the dispute to the League of Nations, which awarded Leticia to Colombia (1934). The active involvement of the USA with the League established a precedent, allowing the interference by an international body in territory protected by the Monroe Doctrine. The successful reconciliation in the Leticia dispute was only one example of how the League of Nations was a striking success in Latin America.
