An uncrewed multi-purpose logistics module (MPLM) built by the Italian Space Agency to serve the International Space Station (ISS). Owned by NASA, it is designed to carry laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments, and supplies to and from the station in the space shuttle. Leonardo's first launch was in March 2001 on the space shuttle Discovery when it carried 16 racks filled with equipment and supplies to outfit the US Destiny Laboratory Module.
Leonardo is named for Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian inventor, scientist, and artist. The Italian Space Agency also built two other MPLMs, called Raffaello and Donatello.
