the founder of the theological movement known as Arminianism. He studied at Utrecht, Leiden, Basle, and Geneva before being ordained in 1588. The last six years of his life were spent as professor of theology at Leiden University. Arminianism subsequently gave rise to the Dutch Remonstrant movement and in England it influenced Archbishop Laud.
