An insect belonging to one of many genera and about 2000 species of neuropteran insects (family Myrmeleontidae), known for their fiercely predatory larvae (called doodlebugs in North America), which dig pitfall traps in loose sand, about 5 cm deep and 7.5 cm wide at the top. Any insect, usually an ant, crossing the edge slides down the unstable side of the pit to the larva waiting below; should the victim try to scramble out, the larva showers it with sand, dislodging the prey and causing the sides to collapse, carrying the insect back to the bottom.
